🎙 A new Bhumi Yoga Talk is out and all about: C 🎙 A new Bhumi Yoga Talk is out and all about:
Cultivating a skilful presence when things arise during practice 🌱

With ”things” I mean:

🌱Our patterns of holding ourselves in a negative way
🌱We may feel we don’t progress
🌱Something is coming up that we don’t have skill to place it yet
🌱Resistance in our practice
🌱Avoidance
🌱Just going through the motions.

Let’s face it, the practice we engage in, some people practice daily, others towards 3-4 times a week - it’s a frequent practice, a dinacharya.

A dinacharya is different from "consuming asanas as entertainment" once a twice a week.

Practice brings us face to face with ourselves. Navigating this can be challenging.

So how can we remain skilful when challenging things surface during the practice, and when they surface more frequently.

In this talk I touch on:

🌱 That when we start the practice as a beginner, the presence in our practice (is for most) different. Then when we become more literate about the practice and ourselves the real work is starting.

🌱 Things arising on the mat often show off the mat, too.

🌱 What our collective tendency is in how to deal with things that we call negative or unpleasurable. And that is to avoid negativity, to push through or away from that, to shut it out. I talk about that this is not skilful and the underlying charge remains.

🌱What are then skilful ways of being with things that come up in practice.

🌱Awareness and acceptance

🌱That through tristhana we can cultivate awareness to the level of the body

🌱Examples of tristhana to cultivate presence

🌱and a lot more

I hope you may find it useful.

As always these talks are recorded after I finished teaching our monthly 90min Primary Series. I always feel that when re-listening that I should rephrase something but I learned that everything can be remodelled and be better in retrospective.

So here is the raw version.

Yesterday was our monthly Led Primary Series follo Yesterday was our monthly Led Primary Series followed by a yoga talk.

It was a great focus yesterday, everybody moving in rhythm yet attending to their own needs in expressing the asanas and transitions between. Beautiful!

Thanks for joining everyone! 💛✨

I hope to have my yoga talk of yesterday up in my podcast channel sometime next week. The talk was all about how to deal with things coming up during practice… the tools we can use when it doesn’t feel like roses and sunshine, when there is unease. Unease is part of life, it informs us and helps us if we don’t fight it and allow it the space it wants.

Yet we often just want to discredit situations / feelings of unease or push through them or check out…. Rather than being with unease in a skillful way so resistance, unease, avoidance, pushing can transform.

This requires skillful focusing of our attention onto the body level experience in real time.
Focusing our attention takes practice….
It’s a great skill that can set you free from following the noise.

Enjoy your Friday
💛

What is a truely powerful skill? Interoception. What is a truely powerful skill?

Interoception.

As it allows for freedom. To make choices from a more informed space.

It enables you to cut the noise that distracts you from living a more centered life.

Interoception is the ability to feel your body, to understand the internal state of your body.

Powerful.

Yet feeling ones body is undervalued and a skill highly underdeveloped in our fast-paced world.

How can you gain interoception?

Set aside a little bit of time in stillness practices (even just 3 min!). How else will you ever cut the noise out there if you don't cultivate focus in "here" (your body).

In the Ashtanga Yoga practice we have a wonderful technique to cultivate interoception by anchoring our experience in what is called tristhana: breath, bandha (inner set up), drishti  (gaze).

The principle of tristhana is fundamental to the Ashtanga Yoga practice. It allows us to be present, in our body in real time, to sense, to evaluate cause and effect, to act more informed.

Take one of these aspects, the dristhi:

We are very visual creatures. We take in crazy amounts of info through our eyes.
Where our eyes go our energy goes.

It takes awareness to see with focus, to not loose our gaze on all the shiny distractions bombarding us.

In practice, we first may use the drishti simply as a gazing point, to focus our eyes.

With more experience in practice , this exploiration may acquire a deeper quality quality. And we may use the gaze at a more subtle level and reflect on:
👀What do I see, and what may I avoid to see?
👀Do I actually see what's present?
👀What is the quality in my seeing?
👀The intention in my gaze? (Do I want to make something happen, do I check out, or am I here?)

This goes deeper the physical act of seeing..

Making time for stillness practices doesn't have to be difficult.

Just sitting for 3 min noticing your breath and your body is great.

You may not feel much at the beginning or find it uneasy. That's ok. 3 min! You can do it!

In our fast paced, information overloaded world, i In our fast paced, information overloaded world, it’s easy to get distractced and carried away.

It takes real work to steady yourself to stay to cut out the noise.

So what do you do to support, steady and calm yourself? What do you do to refocus on what really matters to not get overwhelmed by all the noise out there?

Come join us for Morning Mysore Yoga, every weekday morning.

Mysore Yoga is where you learn and practice yoga under 1-on-1 guidance according to your individual needs and capacity, step by step, in a group. It is a really supportive space for you to learn and focus on yourself, practicing in a way that benefits you, at any stage of life.

Mysore Yoga is a wonderful yoga style to learn and build up your yoga practice without any pressure or the demands of a led class, where everyone is following the same instructions.

At Bhumi Yoga we aren’t really interested in how fancy your poses are, how far you can bend or if or how many handstands you can do.

What we are really interested and invested in is to help you cultivate:
* Steadiness of and connection to your breath
* Rhythm in your routine, an ability to show up to do inner work
* Discriminative ability (what feels good, what benefits and what does not)
* Acceptance and compassion towards yourself as fancy poses come and go and come back over the years.
And along the way your poses may turn out to be fancy, but that doesn’t really matter.

Our Mysore room has a dedicated community of friendly students (practitioners), all practice at different experience levels, beginners practice next to more seasoned practitioners. Everyone is regarded as equal, no-one has an attitude.

We love to welcome beginners!

Yoga is in relationship. The relationship you hav Yoga is in relationship.

The relationship you have with yourself is the most important one, it’s the foundation for the relationship you have with those in your life and essentially all that presents to you.

Wishing for you to cultivate harmony within so you can experience and share it outward, too.

Introduction to Intermediate Series - 3 June Come Introduction to Intermediate Series - 3 June

Come join me on June 3 for one of my Ashtanga Inspiration Days for Ashtanga Practitioners!

This workshop day is an Introduction to introduction to working with the Intermediate Series in an harmonious way.

The intermediate series, or Nadi Shodana, is the clearing of ‘nadis’ (the subtle channels through which our energy moves) (through a strong combination of backbends, rotations (twists), hip opening, inversions and strength based postures.

The fundamental idea behind this study day is to facilitate a path for all students and levels of ability through the first part of this series. Modifying and substituting where necessary options will be given. Each body can benefit from the harmonial nature of intermediate series, whilst remaining safe and comfortingly challenged.

This study day will bring insight into the physical, emotional and spiritual aspects of the practice. Taking time to explore possibilities, individual modifications, and alignment, while adapting some poses to our unique selves, we will seek to free up pathways that help us find greater ease and space in our body.

Whether you are curious to learn how the intermediate series works or whether you want to deepen your knowledge and practice of the sequence, this workshop allows all those with an established Mysore practice to get a taste of diving into the depths of intermediate series.

🙏🏼There are still a few spots open for this special day of study.

I can say a lot about the magic and benefits of pr I can say a lot about the magic and benefits of practicing and learning yoga in the Mysore Style with us at Bhumi Yoga... but our practitioners say it best themselves.

Thank you for your kind testimonial, Jarin!

It's been really wonderful having you practice with us at the yoga school. I just really enjoyed working together, your enthusiasm is an inspiration. Glad you found us, getting into the Ashtanga Mysore practice before you moved to another city. Now you can take your practice with you. And hope to see you agani, soon!

One thing I absolutely love about teaching yoga Mysore Style is that this way of teaching allows me to really work 1-on-1 with each student.

This way I can be fully present with the person in front of me, and their needs; establishing or progressing in their yoga practice in a steady, agreeable and supportive way for them and their life situation.

And we love newcomers!

You can always join us with a drop in class or our special trial month for newcomers.

No previous experience with Yoga and Ashtanga Mysore Yoga is required.
Just come as you are.
