The Groningen Yoga - Emden Connection

Teaching Chandra Krama and Pranayama & Restorative Yoga at Yoga Kula Emden

"Harmony through Connectedness"

That’s the motto of the Yoga Kula Emden, and it really shines through in how they teach, relate to their yoga students, in their space and how the founders of the Kula hold themselves.

I traveled with my family to Emden, Germany, where I taught two workshops at the Yoga Kula. And I just loved everything about this weekend, and appreciate this special connection to Emden.

I just loved everything about this weekend, and appreciate this special connection to Emden.

Going back a few years…

One of the three founders of the Yoga Kula, Rosa Friesenborg, was one of my first yoga students here in Groningen. About 11 years ago she moved to Emden. Rosa started a family, a practice as a psychologist and also started to teach yoga.

The last time she invited me to teach a yoga workshop in Emden was in 2018. Then Rosa still rented space for her classes in the city.

Over the last six years, I also regularly saw and got to know the other two founders of the Yoga Kula, Anita Berendsen and Sirke Schuster. They frequently joined my workshops in Groningen. Anita also joined my online Mysore Yoga classes and my first 6 Months Ashtanga Intensive. And the connection to Emden “grew”. And keeps growing – Anita and Rosa also joined my current Ashtanga Intensive – and I got to meet the beautiful community they created in Emden a few days ago!

Over the last couple of years,

the three of them built up a beautiful yoga shala and community in Emden. Building and opening their yoga shala took them a lot of patience, dealing with German bureaucracy and lots of hands on building, creativity and working together (which they do so well!).
And they really created something very special. Once you set foot into their space, everything just “feels right”. You can sense the care in the smallest of details (respect also to Jens).

It was such a pleasure

to visit and teach in Emden again and witness and marvel at what the three of them put down.

What I also really appreciated was that I could take my whole family along, everyone was warmly welcome. Next to the workshops we enjoyed sharing warm meals, watching the kids play and just time together.

I look forward to my next workshop and visit in Emden!

If you are looking for a place to practice yoga in the North of Germany, a place where the teachers take great care of you, where community is valued and everything about the place just feels right, then the Yoga Kula is your place!
